Retinopexy is a laser procedure to treat retinal tears, holes, or small retinal detachments. During retinopexy, laser light is focused on the retina to create an adhesion between the retina and the eye wall surrounding the retinal defect. This adhesion secures the retina into position and prevents the migration of fluid underneath the retina.
Procedure
The laser light is focused on the retina by the doctor. A hand held lens or contact lens is used. Scleral depression, pushing on the eye wall to bring the retinal defect into view, is often necessary. Topical or peribulbar anesthesia may be used to minimize discomfort.
The procedure usually takes several minutes. The vision is often blurred for several hours, but then returns. Redness and tearing may also occur.
