Pars Planitis is inflammation in the middle cavity of the eye. It involves the vitreous and anterior retina. Most patients notice floaters. Some experience blurry vision. Pain, redness and light sensitivity are uncommon. The inflammation is often chronic with occasional flare ups. Anterior uveitis may also be present. Epiretinal membranes and macular edema occur in more advanced and chronic cases.
Treatment
In mild cases, treatment may not be necessary. More advanced cases will require treatment. Oral and periocular injections of steroids are the mainstay of therapy, and effective in most people. For patients whose disease is unresponsive to corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents such as Methotrexate and Cyclosporin may be used. Surgical removal of vitreous opacity and epiretinal membrane is recommended if the vision is decreased.
