Laser light is useful to treat abnormal blood vessels in the retina. Vascular disorder such as diabetes and vein occlusions cause retinal blood vessels to become leaky. The fluid collects in the retina and causes macular edema. Focal Laser seals leaking blood vessels and is useful in reducing macular edema.
Treatment is administered in the office with the use of a topical anesthetic eye drop. A contact lens is placed onto the eye to focus the laser and prevent the eye from blinking. The patient will see bright flashes of light during the treatment. Typically there is no pain. The treatment only takes a few minutes.
Treatment is usually very safe. The most common side effect is small spots in the vision. These usually subside over time. Complications such as bleeding and scar formation are rare.
